Getting Started with Homeschooling
New to homeschooling or still deciding if it is right for you? Start here.
Who is Jennifer Baccanello?
Jennifer Baccanello is a homeschooling mom of three and a trusted voice in her local homeschooling community in Hong Kong. For more than ten years she has educated her children at home, and she shares practical tips, gentle guidance and honest experience for families who want learning to be flexible, child-centered and rooted in emotional wellbeing.
Is homeschooling right for my family?
There is no one-size-fits-all way to educate a child, but there is a right way for your child. Homeschooling suits families who want learning to be flexible and shaped around their child's needs. Start where you are, notice what helps your child thrive, and have the courage to adjust as you go.
I'm new to homeschooling and feel overwhelmed. Where should I start?
Feeling overwhelmed at the beginning is completely normal. Start small: let go of the pressure to homeschool "perfectly," settle into a simple rhythm, and give yourself time to learn alongside your children.
Connecting with other homeschooling parents makes a real difference, which is why Jennifer offers meetups and workshops that help families cut through the overwhelm.
Do I need a teaching background to homeschool my children?
Jennifer didn't begin with a carefully crafted plan. She learned through reading, adapting, making mistakes and trying again. Her journey shows that you don't need to have everything figured out on day one; what matters most is paying attention to how your child learns and being willing to adapt.
Why did Jennifer choose to homeschool?
Homeschooling began out of necessity rather than a master plan. Her eldest son was struggling with anxiety and was not getting the support he needed at school, so she brought him home, certain that something had to change.
More than a decade later, that decision has grown into a creative, flexible way of learning where her children feel safe to explore, breathe and simply be themselves.
Our Approach & Weekly Rhythm
What flexible, child-centered learning looks like from day to day.
What homeschooling approach does Jennifer use?
A blended, child-centered approach that draws on Montessori principles, project-based learning, nature exploration, quiet reflection and plenty of books. Some days are hands-on and high-energy; others are slower and more reflective, and both are equally valuable.
Do you follow a set curriculum?
There is no rigid schedule or standardized curriculum. Learning follows the children's curiosity, supported by books, projects, science kits, art materials and time outdoors. Half-finished experiments and creative mess are simply part of a home that is full of life and learning.
Do I need a strict schedule to homeschool successfully?
Not at all. After trying colour-coded timetables and rigid plans that never stuck, Jennifer's family settled into a loose weekly rhythm that gives structure without pressure. The aim is to find a rhythm that genuinely fits your family rather than chasing a "perfect" timetable.
What does a typical homeschool week look like?
A typical week follows a loose rhythm rather than a fixed timetable, with room for both busy, hands-on days and quieter, reflective ones. Jennifer shares what her family's week really looks like, including what they skip entirely, in The Learning Log.
What role do books and reading play in your homeschooling?
Books are at the heart of everyday learning, and the shelves are stacked with well-loved novels. Reading aloud together is a favourite part of the day, and Jennifer keeps a growing list of the books her children ask for again and again in The Learning Log.
How is nature part of your homeschooling?
Nature exploration is one of the core pillars of Jennifer's approach. Long walks and plenty of time away from screens give children space to observe, ask questions and learn from the world around them.
Emotional Wellbeing & Hard Days
Why emotional safety sits at the heart of every learning day.
How do you support a child's emotional wellbeing while learning at home?
Emotional safety comes first. Regular mental check-ins, journaling and open conversations about how children are feeling are built into the everyday routine. When children feel heard and supported, their natural curiosity and love of learning shine through.
What should I do when homeschooling feels hard?
Not every day flows. Some days feel heavy or messy, or it seems like nothing is working, and that is okay. Make room for emotions and tough days, slow down, and remember that slow progress is still progress. Jennifer writes honestly about these moments in The Learning Log.
What matters most in child-centered learning?
How children feel while they learn. Are they curious? Do they feel emotionally safe? Do they know their voices matter? Jennifer's guiding belief is simple: kids are not machines, and learning isn't a race. When you slow down, listen and give children space to lead, remarkable things happen.
Community, Support & Contact
Connection, shared resources and how to reach Jennifer.
Do you support homeschooling families in Hong Kong?
Yes. Community is at the heart of Jennifer's work because she knows how isolating homeschooling can feel, especially in the early days. She organizes group meetups, hosts resource-sharing workshops and creates space for parents to talk, swap ideas and support one another, with no gatekeeping and no polished personas.
Can you help me create a personalized learning plan?
You are welcome to get in touch to talk about homeschooling programs or a personalized learning plan for your child. Share a little about your family and your child's needs through the Contact page.
